Obituary

Dorothy June Gunn, formerly of Pinehurst, North Carolina, passed away in Frisco, Texas, on January 9, 2021, at 95.  There will be a private family service.

Dorothy was born in Chicago, Illinois, on August 29, 1925, to Chester Hovelson and Ann (Zver) Hovelson.  She grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota, graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy,  attended the colleges of St. Mary of the Springs (now Ohio Dominican) in Columbus, Ohio, and St. Catherine in St. Paul, majoring in English and Communications.  Her professional experience in Minnesota, Ohio, Texas, and California, included editing a house organ, editing scientific papers, writing advertising copy, institutional publicity, radio commercials, procedure manuals, and a weekly newspaper column.  Dorothy married John Hamje in 1947 in Columbus, and soon moved to New Jersey and began a family of eventually five children.  The family relocated to Dallas, Texas, in 1957, and Dorothy saw her children into high school and college and enjoyed working part-time for The Horchow Collection, Preston State Bank, and The Hockaday School. Dorothy married Richard “Dick” Gunn in 1989 at the Fern Grotto in Kauai, Hawaii, and moved from San Jose, California to Pinehurst, following a trip to Hilton Head, where they lived until Dick’s death.  Dorothy returned to the Dallas area until her death.

Dorothy was active in the Catholic communities wherever she resided, from the Catholic Youth Center, St. Anne’s Society, PTAs to serving as a Eucharistic minister. She volunteered at Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst and was recognized for over 1600 hours of service spanning 13 years. Dorothy excelled in anything she attempted and was often in a leadership position.

Dorothy had a creative side and loved to write, participate in amateur theater, dance, sing, sew, and paint. One of her short stories and children’s books received awards at the Texas Pro-Am Writer’s Rally.  Her watercolor paintings and sewing creations won many ribbons on her entries to the State Fair of Texas and the Pinehurst Centennial Country Fair for her strawberry nut bread. Dorothy enjoyed good food, was a great cook, and had a touch for decorating.  Dorothy and Dick spent their retirement years traveling and playing golf.

Dorothy never met a stranger and would engage anyone in conversation and had a fantastic sense of humor.  She will be missed by those who loved her dearly.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Chester and Ann Hovelson; her husbands John F. Hamje and Richard E. Gunn and her son, Mark E. Hamje.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Bonnie Hamje and husband David Volpone of Dallas, Texas; her son, John Hamje and wife, Paula of Olympia, Washington; her daughter, Teresa Masdon, and husband Scott of The Colony, Texas; her son, Matthew Hamje, and his wife; Vena of Dallas, Texas; her sister, Jeanne Broenen of San Jose, California; her brother, Bob Hovelson and wife; Kate of Lillydale, Minnesota; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Donations in Dorothy’s memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, her favorite charity, or to a charity of your choice.

Please leave the family condolences and share memories on this website.

"Nothing prepares you for the grief you go through when losing a child. I called this funeral home at 2:00 am broken and could barely talk. The amount of compassion and empathy they showed me immediately let me know I found the right place to cremate my son. I cannot thank them enough for their professionalism, SINCERE concern, and commitment to making sure my son was honored in the most respectful way. I hope this Funeral home values her as much as my family and I do."

"I can’t say enough about how helpful and professional Dusty Martin, the funeral director at the Aria Cremation location on NW Highway has been. From my initial call, he was kind and informative. My friend died at home while on hospice and she was picked up in about an hour after receiving the call from the hospice nurse. The person who arrived to pick her up was also very professional/respectful and allowed us to take as much time with her as we wished. When I met with Dusty the next day about arrangements, he explained the process and options available without being pushy or trying to “sell” extras. Throughout the process, he kept me informed and, for example, was careful to be certain I understood the cost of the obituary I wanted and offered some options for reducing that cost if I wished. When I stopped by for another reason and started talking about some of the problems I was having with the pictures and media I hoped to use at a memorial lunch I was planning, he not only listened patiently but offered technology advice and let me use his personal media player. I have had experience arranging cremations for four others using two other local companies, and this experience with Dusty at Aria has been by far the best one I have had."

"My Daddy’s service and our family experience at Aria Northwest Highway was truly blessed. Funeral Director Dustin Martin is the kind of person that you would like to see on a more regular basis – but in his industry – you hope to not see him that often. That being said – THANK YOU DUSTIN for your unending kindness, compassion and friendship through the process. Meeting you and discussing Dallas History, Find A Grave and my Dad’s lifelong contributions to the great City of Dallas was simply wonderful! In memory of my dad James A. Dodd, Sr. – I want to personally thank you and let you know that you made everything better in that moment. Your calling to “Be There” is spot on. Aria has a one in a million guy in you! Bling Blinky of TEXAS Shout Out: God Bless You!!"
