Albert Erwin Harris, III

Obituary

Albert (Bert) Erwin Harris, III, age 65, died peacefully at home on 10-7-22 after an 18 month battle with liver and bone cancer. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Tracey Busbice Harris. Bert and Tracey had a love story like no other. They briefly met when they were kids at his father’s floral shop, Sunset Florist in Oak Cliff. In high school they were both in choir, started dating on 11-22-74, and the rest is history. Their marriage on 3-5-82 was meant to be. Although they shared heartaches and losses in their years together, Bert would say he never remembered a bad day. Bert had many interests throughout his 65 years. Starting early in life he had a great love and passion for music. Above all he loved the guitar, and was an avid collector. From his original Yamaha he played in high school to the many, many electric guitars he collected over his lifetime, there was never a day where music didn’t play an important role. Bert also loved golf, and played every weekend for many years. He loved Stevens Park Golf Course, and had a close bond with his foursome. He loved Herrera’s Mexican food (#13A), the Dallas Cowboys, his animals, and was happy being home enjoying the simple pleasures. Bert had a quick wit, and there was much laughter in his daily life. Admittedly, sometimes irreverent. He was generous with his love and attention. Bert read the Dallas Morning News from front page to back every day of his teenage and adult life. The best compliment Bert could give someone is they were interesting because they were interested. He graduated with a bachelors degree in accounting from NTSU in 1983, joining Bank of America and having a 33 year career. As a Senior Vice President, he spent most of his career in Trust and Estate Tax. He was open and honest, and had a rare integrity and work ethic. He retired in 2016 to begin living the dream he and Tracey had planned for years. His life was cut short, but his impact will live as long as those who knew him. Bert was preceded in death by his father, A.E. Harris, Jr., mother Mary Jo Fowler Harris, sister Karen Diane Caton, and his beloved cousin Chip Fowler. Besides Tracey, he is survived by his brothers-in-law Tommy Caton, Mike Busbice (Nina) and Dale Busbice (Gina), nephews Zac Adams (Nicole), LM (Kelly), and nieces Elise Arnold (Josh), Emily Washington (Stephen), Angela Stein (Kevin), Jill Ellison (Jake), Stephanie Helms, Stephanie Mitchell (Jonathan) and all the grand nieces and nephews. His best friends Steve Gaudin and Tommy Stogner were very much loved by Bert, as were many life long friends. For his love of music, donations can be made to KUTX.org in Austin, which gave Bert so much joy. Also Bert donated several guitars to Guitars for Vets (donations@guitarsforvets.org), and supported North Texas Food Bank (ntfb.org). There will never be another like Bert Harris, and we will honor his wonderful life in January, 2023. Details will be posted on www.ariacremation.com as well as Facebook.

Although sad to hear of such a beautiful life silenced so soon, I’m forever grateful to have met, worked with and loved such a wonderful person. From day one, in 1983, Bert was an awesome mentor and friend to me and my family. In honor of his love for music, I borrow these words from a song, “Thank you for being a Friend”.
Our family will keep your family in our thoughts and prayers.

Bert I believe you were a gentle man. Gentle people have many friends who they may not know well but who are impressed with them. Now everyone with you is gentle too. Hope you are with everyone you love..

Been years since I had left Dallas and recently connected with Bert last year on FaceBook…over guitars and music. Had no inkling he faced such devastating health issues. Deeply sorry for the loss Tracie, Tommy, Steve, family and friends are enduring for such and incredibly funny, thoughtful and sweet man. May his legacy stay alive in all of us. Bert, you certainly earned your wings here and though you are gone I am glad you are not suffering from the cancer any more. Rest In Heaven, we will have that jam session I always wanted to have together when I transition too.

Being part of his golf foursome for about 20 years and being in the same garage band were just a part of our friendship. Had we met earlier, we might have worked at the same record store–at the same time. He was like a brother from another family. RIP Bert…stay in tune and hit them straight….

Some people make the world a better place by just being in it. Bert Harris was one of those people. My condolences to Tracey and to all of Bert’s family and many friends. Peace be with you.

I have so many sweet memories sitting in the auditorium windows with Tommy Stogner at our musical rehearsals. We had so much fun and there was always so much laughter. I’ll be praying for you in the days to come, Tracey. Much love to you.

    Tracey,
I was saddened to learn of Bert’s passing through Steve and Andrew. I have always kept you both in my mind, and when speaking to Steve I would ask about you both. I enjoyed all the times we shared together in our young adulthood. Life seemed fairly simple in the early 80s, didn’t it?

I wish you the best during this time of struggle. I know that Bert will be greatly missed.

    Hugs,
    Donna Martinez

I know your last year was rough. You’re at peace. I’ll see you again and we’ll start a band, play some golf, find the best pizza and enchiladas. Thank you for a lifetime of incredible memories. We laughed, cried. I know you’ll be following the Cowboys.. but with no more anxiety!! You made a mark. We’re all missing you. Love you Bert.

"Nothing prepares you for the grief you go through when losing a child. I called this funeral home at 2:00 am broken and could barely talk. The amount of compassion and empathy they showed me immediately let me know I found the right place to cremate my son. I cannot thank them enough for their professionalism, SINCERE concern, and commitment to making sure my son was honored in the most respectful way. I hope this Funeral home values her as much as my family and I do."

"I can’t say enough about how helpful and professional Dusty Martin, the funeral director at the Aria Cremation location on NW Highway has been. From my initial call, he was kind and informative. My friend died at home while on hospice and she was picked up in about an hour after receiving the call from the hospice nurse. The person who arrived to pick her up was also very professional/respectful and allowed us to take as much time with her as we wished. When I met with Dusty the next day about arrangements, he explained the process and options available without being pushy or trying to “sell” extras. Throughout the process, he kept me informed and, for example, was careful to be certain I understood the cost of the obituary I wanted and offered some options for reducing that cost if I wished. When I stopped by for another reason and started talking about some of the problems I was having with the pictures and media I hoped to use at a memorial lunch I was planning, he not only listened patiently but offered technology advice and let me use his personal media player. I have had experience arranging cremations for four others using two other local companies, and this experience with Dusty at Aria has been by far the best one I have had."

"My Daddy’s service and our family experience at Aria Northwest Highway was truly blessed. Funeral Director Dustin Martin is the kind of person that you would like to see on a more regular basis – but in his industry – you hope to not see him that often. That being said – THANK YOU DUSTIN for your unending kindness, compassion and friendship through the process. Meeting you and discussing Dallas History, Find A Grave and my Dad’s lifelong contributions to the great City of Dallas was simply wonderful! In memory of my dad James A. Dodd, Sr. – I want to personally thank you and let you know that you made everything better in that moment. Your calling to “Be There” is spot on. Aria has a one in a million guy in you! Bling Blinky of TEXAS Shout Out: God Bless You!!"
