Frances Mildred Strickland Owen
Obituary
Frances Mildred Strickland Owen (Mom) was born May 22, 1936 in her parent’s farmhouse in the rural community of Alfordsville, NC and passed away December 7, 2022 in her assisted living apartment in Plano, TX at the age of 86.
Frances married John Wesley Owen (Dad) on December 18, 1952 and they were married 58 years until John passed away in 2010.Mom agreed to marry Dad after he declared he loved her for all he was worth, then reached into his pocket & pulled out all the money he had—50 cents! Throughout their marriage they regularly declared “I love you 50 cents worth!” to each other. As the years passed, Dad’s love language to Mom including gifting her with jewelry and yellow roses on special occasions.
Mom was a proud Army wife and never complained when Dad would receive orders that required us to move 8 times or Dad’s 6 deployments overseas and numerous maneuver assignments that required him to be away from us for extended lengths of time. Once Dad retired from the Army, they moved 9 more times and eventually “retired” in Lufkin, TX. In 2012 Mom moved to The Waterford Assisted Living in Plano, TX.
Wherever we lived, Mom made sure that we were active in a church. Mom & Dad became leaders in those churches and the church became an integral part of our family life. Mom even worked at several of the churches as secretary, preschool carpool driver & cook and church hostess for Wednesday night dinners and special events. And she loved singing in the choir and had the privilege to sing in the choir at a Billy Graham Crusade in San Antonio. The greatest gift that Mom gave to us was introducing us to the love & mercy of our Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ!
Mom was a great cook and really enjoyed preparing & sharing meals. She had a knack for “fixing” dishes and adjusting new recipes with her own special touch. Mom loved preparing a meal for a large group but especially enjoyed preparing food for our family. Cooking was her love language and she loved us well.
In her later declining years, Mom spent a good bit of her days just talking with the Lord. It was not unusual to walk into her room & hear her just talking out loud to Him. Most of her prayers were centered around how she was doing and each of her kids daily.
