Obituary

Dr. Jacqueline Monette “Jackie” Latham, age 77, passed away on February 3, 2022, at Faith Presbyterian Hospice in Dallas, after a nearly 5-year-long battle with ovarian cancer.   She was born March 15, 1944 in San Angelo, Texas, the only child of Lee Roland Latham and Virginia Pearl Ray.   Her father was a P-38 Lightning fighter pilot during WW II, assigned in 1943 to the 339th Fighter Squadron on Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands. Her mother was a talented landscape artist.   Love of family and a strong bond to her grandparents, A.E. [Arilious Eula] and Elsie (Summers) Latham, stirred her interest in genealogy, which she researched and posted on Ancestry.com. For several years she served as Coke County, TX GenWeb Coordinator, receiving the Mike Basham Memorial County of the Month Award in Aug 2015 for her work in the content and design of the website.   Jackie’s passion for the culinary arts brought her in contact with a variety of celebrity chefs, many of whom taught cooking classes that she attended and published cookbooks that she bought. Her collection of cookbooks would fill several library shelves and her collection of cookware as well as baking items and accessories rivaled any kitchen. She claimed to be the number one fan of Dallas celebrity chef, Kent Rathbun.   Her many interests included botany, sailing, scuba diving, backpacking, astronomy, photography, art and music. An avid reader, she especially enjoyed medieval fantasy stories and post-apocalyptic world survivalist stories, including some in the zombie genre.   Jackie met her husband while she was working on her Masters Degree in microbiology and teaching microbiology lab at Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (TCOM) in Ft. Worth. He was a handsome medical student who was smitten by her beauty and intellect. She later applied and was accepted to TCOM, where she earned her Doctor of Osteopathy degree in 1984, but did not pursue a career in medicine.   After her husband completed his Internal Medicine training at Methodist Medical Center in Dallas, they were married in the United Methodist Church on Preston Road in Dallas on September 15, 1984. The ceremony was solemnized by Reverend William H. Wilson, Chaplain at Methodist Medical Center.   Jackie had a kind and sensitive spirit, especially towards animals. She loved her rescued dogs and made regular donations to the SPCA of Texas. With an eye for beauty, she collected beautiful things and decorated the home with elegance.   Her belief in Jesus Christ as her Savior governed her daily living and gave her His promise of everlasting life. The ashes from her cremation will be buried in the Latham Family plot in the cemetery at Robert Lee, Texas. A memorial service for her will be announced at a later date.   Jackie was preceded in death by her father, age 45, and her mother, age 94. She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Dr. Donald Holcomb of Dallas, first cousins Bill Pharis and wife Pam of Levelland, Texas and Jan Pharis and wife Grace of Las Cruces, New Mexico. If desired, donations may be made to the SPCA of Texas or to the San Angelo Genealogical and Historical Society. Please leave the family condolences and share memories on this website.   Arrangements under the direction of:

I am both impressed and inspired by this beautiful tribute to Jackie’s life. What a smart, talented & productive lady. We bonded over our love and devotion to our “twin” pups but I do wish I had gotten to know her on a deeper level. I could have learned a lot from her. Donald took such loving care of her in sickness & in health. ❤️

A very loving tribute to Jackie, detailing her many interests: reading, cooking classes, helping rescue animals, genealogy, her many collections of beautiful things and so much else. She was blessed to have you, Donald, to be by her side and care for her in what had to have been a long and painful ordeal. May she now rest in peace

Our deepest condolences to Donald. May Jackie’s soul find peace.
We got to know Jackie in the Bent Tree North neighborhood when we moved here a few years back. She always had a cheerful and sunny outlook on life. We will miss her smile and our small talk. Her love of pets and animals was always visible. I learned about her interest in genealogy and her research in that area. She also loved a variety of cuisines including spices from India as well as an interest in the food and culture.
Jackie made the neighborhood a better place. She was a neighbor and a friend and will be in our memories forever.

    Small Jackie Poem for Don

She’s flown. Gone now. Jackie, beautiful bird,
The branch she launched from still trembling,
Swaying in your heart. For those of us less blessed
By her gentle soul, it might never have occurred
that in her lightness, lighted eyes, generous smile,
in spice clouds in her kitchen and sunny sidewalks,
was her backbone of iron that into Heaven soared.

"Nothing prepares you for the grief you go through when losing a child. I called this funeral home at 2:00 am broken and could barely talk. The amount of compassion and empathy they showed me immediately let me know I found the right place to cremate my son. I cannot thank them enough for their professionalism, SINCERE concern, and commitment to making sure my son was honored in the most respectful way. I hope this Funeral home values her as much as my family and I do."

"I can’t say enough about how helpful and professional Dusty Martin, the funeral director at the Aria Cremation location on NW Highway has been. From my initial call, he was kind and informative. My friend died at home while on hospice and she was picked up in about an hour after receiving the call from the hospice nurse. The person who arrived to pick her up was also very professional/respectful and allowed us to take as much time with her as we wished. When I met with Dusty the next day about arrangements, he explained the process and options available without being pushy or trying to “sell” extras. Throughout the process, he kept me informed and, for example, was careful to be certain I understood the cost of the obituary I wanted and offered some options for reducing that cost if I wished. When I stopped by for another reason and started talking about some of the problems I was having with the pictures and media I hoped to use at a memorial lunch I was planning, he not only listened patiently but offered technology advice and let me use his personal media player. I have had experience arranging cremations for four others using two other local companies, and this experience with Dusty at Aria has been by far the best one I have had."

"My Daddy’s service and our family experience at Aria Northwest Highway was truly blessed. Funeral Director Dustin Martin is the kind of person that you would like to see on a more regular basis – but in his industry – you hope to not see him that often. That being said – THANK YOU DUSTIN for your unending kindness, compassion and friendship through the process. Meeting you and discussing Dallas History, Find A Grave and my Dad’s lifelong contributions to the great City of Dallas was simply wonderful! In memory of my dad James A. Dodd, Sr. – I want to personally thank you and let you know that you made everything better in that moment. Your calling to “Be There” is spot on. Aria has a one in a million guy in you! Bling Blinky of TEXAS Shout Out: God Bless You!!"
