James “Jim” Elwin Scott
Obituary
James (Jim) Elwin Scott, loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, died peacefully on February 4, 2023, at the age of 95. He leaves a legacy of love, work, integrity and an unwavering faith in Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior.
Jim was born March 2, 1927, in Neillsville, Wisconsin, and graduated from Neillsville High School in 1944 as Valedictorian of his class. In 1945, Jim enlisted in the US Navy’s Officer’s Training Program. Following WWII, Jim enrolled in the University of Wisconsin, and graduated in 1948 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering. Following graduation, Jim briefly taught in the University’s Engineering Department, before moving to Chicago to work as a District Manager for the Portland Cement Association. Jim was a registered Professional Engineer and during his career, served on State and National Professional Engineering Boards.
While in Chicago, Jim met the love of his life, Grace Hoag, and married December 28, 1950. Jim and Grace had two daughters, Judi and Linda, who considered Jim the greatest Dad in the world.
In 1968, Jim and Grace moved the family to Dallas, TX for Jim to launch a new career as Corporate Marketing Director for General Portland Cement Company, one of the largest Portland cement companies in America. Over the next 24 years, Jim excelled as a salesman, manager, and leader. He served as VP/General Manager of cement and concrete operations in Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Missouri, Nebraska, and Kansas before retiring in 1992.
Jim was dedicated and enthusiastic about what was important in life – his family, his career, his church, and bass fishing. His wife, children, sons-in-law, and grandchildren adored him. After he retired, in addition to family and fishing, Jim most enjoyed being an active member and volunteer at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, where he found friends and opportunities to serve others.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Jess and Dorothy Scott, his brothers Walter and Robert, and his wife Grace. He is survived by his daughters and their husbands, Judi and Dale Dawson, Linda and Todd Newman, four grandchildren, Katherine Beherec and her husband Sean, Jack Dawson and his wife Cassie, Madison and Grace Newman, and two great grandchildren, Jacqueline and Peter Beherec.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 11am at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Carrollton. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to Prince of Peace Lutheran Church – Care Ministry.
