James (Jim) Sykora was born on October 6, 1935 and went home to be with his Lord and Savior on November 11, 2022. He was one of six children born to Joseph J. Sykora and Ernie D. Fulmer Sykora in Avoca, Texas. He loved his Lord, family, friends and fellow church members. He particularly enjoyed the social group he founded, the ROMEOs (Retired Old Men Eating Out), and was especially fond of the many great people he met in the retirement community where he resided, including his dear friend, Joy Willens. Jim was quick witted and always ready with a fun joke. He was known for his kindness and eagerness to help others.

Jim served in the U.S. Army from 1955 To 1957, primarily stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. He was introduced to his wife, Frances who was working as a telephone operator with his sister Jean Sykora Larkin. They married on April 3, 1958 and celebrated 59 years of marriage. Together they had two children, Sharon F. Sykora McCallum and James D. Sykora, Jr.

He spent most of his career in the Banking and Mortgage Loan business, eventually owning his own company, Choice Mortgage, Inc. He was instrumental in developing the DFW Mortgage Brokerage Industry in the 1990’s. His hobbies over the years included hunting, golf, pool, landscaping and gardening. He and Frances were faithful members of Messiah Lutheran Church for over 50 years, where he served as Elder and many other capacities.

Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Frances, his brother LeRoy Sykora, sister, Yvonne Sykora Hutchins, sister, Ernie Jo Sykora Bishop, and brother, Mark Sykora.

He is survived by his daughter, Sharon Sykora McCallum and her husband Darrell McCallum, son Jim Sykora, Jr. and his wife Robin Kralik Sykora, Grandchildren Meagan McCallum Waggener and husband Scott Waggener, Matt McCallum and wife Amanda Judd McCallum, Emily McCallum Dudensing, and husband Emery Dudensing, Rachel Sykora Meeks and husband Toby Meeks, Ellen Sykora and Julia Sykora, along with great grandchildren Colten and Max McCallum, Weston Waggener, Denton, Emmett and Truett Dudensing, and Toby and Phineas Meeks, as well as his sister, Jean Sykora Larkin, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are joyfully invited to celebrate his life at a visitation at 1:30 pm on Thursday, November 17, 2022 at Messiah Lutheran Church, 1801 W. Plano Parkway, Plano, Tx, 75075. Memorial Service to immediately follow at 3:00 pm.

Uncle Jim was a ray of light in any room! I don’t think I ever saw him with out a smile on his face. He was a gentle soul. He was by my granny’s side day and night in her last few years of life, as the loyal brother that he was. He always said “ she is such a sweetheart.” He was a sweetheart too. Heaven is rejoicing and there is more laughter now that he is living there eternally. Until we see you again <3

Uncle Jim loved the Lord and his family so much. Iknow he was so proud of Sharon and Jimmy and their families.

He expressed this love through his presence and support. He patiently taught me to tell time when I was very young. Uncle Jim came to my first piano recital when I was five and brought his date Francis. They were both very brave and loving. They married shortly thereafter. It was my first wedding, and he was so handsome and Aunt Francis so beautiful!

Uncle Jim and Aunt Francis continued to love and keep family close and these are the sweet times we shall cherish and remember.

I love and your family. I shall meet you at Jesus feet.

    In Christ’s Love

Jim Sykora gave me my first job at Richardson Savings. He was a wonderful man. I have not seen him is about 50 years. He taught me about the business and how to treat others and helped me earn money to go to Boy Scout camp. I am sorry that the world has lost such a Great Man.

"Nothing prepares you for the grief you go through when losing a child. I called this funeral home at 2:00 am broken and could barely talk. The amount of compassion and empathy they showed me immediately let me know I found the right place to cremate my son. I cannot thank them enough for their professionalism, SINCERE concern, and commitment to making sure my son was honored in the most respectful way. I hope this Funeral home values her as much as my family and I do."

"I can’t say enough about how helpful and professional Dusty Martin, the funeral director at the Aria Cremation location on NW Highway has been. From my initial call, he was kind and informative. My friend died at home while on hospice and she was picked up in about an hour after receiving the call from the hospice nurse. The person who arrived to pick her up was also very professional/respectful and allowed us to take as much time with her as we wished. When I met with Dusty the next day about arrangements, he explained the process and options available without being pushy or trying to “sell” extras. Throughout the process, he kept me informed and, for example, was careful to be certain I understood the cost of the obituary I wanted and offered some options for reducing that cost if I wished. When I stopped by for another reason and started talking about some of the problems I was having with the pictures and media I hoped to use at a memorial lunch I was planning, he not only listened patiently but offered technology advice and let me use his personal media player. I have had experience arranging cremations for four others using two other local companies, and this experience with Dusty at Aria has been by far the best one I have had."

"My Daddy’s service and our family experience at Aria Northwest Highway was truly blessed. Funeral Director Dustin Martin is the kind of person that you would like to see on a more regular basis – but in his industry – you hope to not see him that often. That being said – THANK YOU DUSTIN for your unending kindness, compassion and friendship through the process. Meeting you and discussing Dallas History, Find A Grave and my Dad’s lifelong contributions to the great City of Dallas was simply wonderful! In memory of my dad James A. Dodd, Sr. – I want to personally thank you and let you know that you made everything better in that moment. Your calling to “Be There” is spot on. Aria has a one in a million guy in you! Bling Blinky of TEXAS Shout Out: God Bless You!!"
