Obituary
Tony B. de Gala, MD, 87, of Dallas, Texas, passed away Monday, August 15, 2022 with loved ones by his side. Tony was born January 17, 1935 in Manila, Philippines to Feliciano and Rosario (Banzon) de Gala. He graduated from De La Salle High School in 1951. He went on to study Medicine at the University of Santo Tomas – College of Medicine. Tony met his wife Nina C. Garcia in 1954. They were married on January 17, 1961 in Manila, Philippines. In 1962, they moved to the United States to Toledo, Ohio for an internship at St. Vincent’s Hospital. Then they moved to do his residency at Gill Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, Virginia. In 1970, they moved to Palo Alto, California so he could further his education in Opthalmology at Stanford University. In 1972, while working in Chicago, Illinois, Dr. Robert Kemp contacted him and said they needed an Opthalmologist in SE Iowa. In 1972, he moved his family to Keokuk, Iowa. He started his practice and worked until his retirement in 2006. Tony enjoyed gambling, watching sports especially tennis, the Iowa Hawkeyes and his beloved New York Yankees and his favorite player Aaron Judge. All Rise!! Tony is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Nina G. de Gala; along with four children, Gweneth and Andy Burtraw of Union, Kentucky, Ginger and David Uyemura of Dallas, Texas, Gerardo and Susan de Gala of Plainfield, Illinois and Gary and April de Gala of Keokuk, Iowa; nine grandchildren, Trevor (Brittany) Burtraw, Ian (Megan) Burtraw, Tony (Tessa) Burtraw, Jonathan Uyemura, Alex de Gala, Adam de Gala, Andrew de Gala, A.J. de Gala and Julia de Gala; two great-grandchildren, Ada and Beau; four sisters, Ludy and Tony Sian, Ching and Gerry Estrada, Baby and Mario Tiaoqui, Minabelle and Ralph Linda; and many loving nieces, nephews and relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents and his older brother Fil de Gala. A special thank you to his palliative care physician Dr. Alfred Levy whose compassion and care was truly wonderful and a blessing. Also, to his hospice nurses Sunny and Molly for their loving care and support especially during his final days. The family has entrusted Aria Cremation Services & Funeral Homes with the arrangements. A memorial mass and private viewing for family is scheduled for August 19, 2022 in Dallas, Texas with Fr. Garrett Bockman from All Saints Catholic Church officiating the mass and blessing. Tony was a friend and colleague, who helped me initiate my practice in Keokuk, Iowa. His absence here has been felt over the years, and he has been sincerely missed. My wife and I send our deepest condolences to the family.
